Sclerotherapy is a procedure used to treat blood vessels or blood vessel malformations (vascular malformations) and also those of the lymphatic system.  A medicine is injected into the vessels, which makes them shrink.  It is used for children and young adults with vascular or lymphatic malformations. In adults, sclerotherapy is often used to treat varicose veins and hemorrhoids. Treatment for varicose veins is cosmetic, except for hemorrhage.

What is the best way to treat leg veins?

Dr. Papadopoulos  and Dr. Kim use sclerotherapy for the treatment of leg veins.  It is considered the “Gold Standard” for eliminating these vessels.  Although laser treatment is effective for tiny vessels, such as those on the face, it is not the primary method for treating leg veins.  Sclerotherapy is used in the treatment of both varicose veins and spider veins. It is a process by which a Sclerosing Solution is injected directly into the vein and causes them to collapse and be absorbed by the body.

What can I expect?

This treatment may also help with the aching, cramping and swelling experienced by some patients. The procedure is relatively painless. Sclerotherapy requires the wearing of prescription support stocking continuously for a total of three days after the injections.

A consultation is necessary before scheduling a procedure. Sclerotherapy is considered a cosmetic procedure, not covered by insurance.
